Not big on the ego-stroking, though. And a very strange flavor.
There was the dinner where I somehow couldn't keep from dripping salsa everywhere, and at the same time couldn't find my waiter to get some extra napkins.
Then he brought me the wrong bill, and disappeared again.
Then the show where, first of all, I didn't even get 3 singers together until 9:20pm, and then, when it did get busy(ish), it felt like everyone wanted to sing the same songs. I mean, it wasn't quite that, but...
cekyr0 and jeffercine came in, which was wonderful. I believe I actually hadn't seen Jefferson since San Jose Pride. And I'd only seen Alex once since then.
So of course, last night was the first time anyone had sung the song Alex had tipped me to get. Just before he got there. So, y'know, not a huge deal, but well - awkward.
Then, not 20 minutes after genuine_snark walks in, someone sings the song he tipped me to buy for him. I convinced him to sing it later (Talk Dirty to Me, BTW), and he did, indeed, rock it, despite one of our lights self-destructing in the middle of the song.
Then there was stuff like, y'know, one of the lights self-destructing in the middle of a song. It was just a plastic casing, but it went all over the dance floor. And I couldn't go help clean it up, because I had a drunk dude with little English blocking my way, as he tried to slur what Doors song he wanted to sing next.
And, oh yeah, the drunk dude. Who kept on trying to sing with people. Which can be fine, except for the whole not asking, and not being able to carry a tune in a paper cup bits.
I could not seem to get the sound right. I assume a combination of air pressure and humidity meant that certain mid-range frequencies resonated like hell, so some singers - and backgrounds - were painfully loud pretty much independent of any settings I might make. I ended up lowering mid-ranges across the board, and got it, well, survivable. At least I stopped getting that "you're losing hearing" buzz in my ears. And timenchanter started being able to hear customers.
But then, we had cool people, which makes up for a lot. Alex and Jeff and Geo and Timmie, of course, but also jackal_logic and, much later, sparkle_journal. Then their friend Matt, a very good singer who I've... supposedly... met... before...
And trivialt, and snafflekid, and even hogarthhughes, though he didn't come by and say hello.
We had some Nate-o, who came with Devon and a couple of girls I hadn't seen before (Renée and Dana). The girls got enough courage to sing at the very end of the night, with the odd added bonus of seeing Devon jump up on a go-go box, and dance & sing along (sans mic). The only scary bit being that Devon was their driver...
So, even with all the weirdness, and having to escort supersniffles to her car past the drunk dude, and wondering what would explode on me next, all-in-all, a good night. All 7 rotations and $7 in tips of it.
Yeah, I'm not buying discs today.
Probably for the best. Given today's luck with mail order, who knows what I'd get if I did order discs...
At least my quiet supper at IHOP went well.
Today, well, I need to call my dad. It is his 87th birthday, after all. And tonight is entropyca and deekers's bachelor party at the bar, so I know where I'll be.
