I felt quite accomplished in that I managed to load the car and make it to the bar (Hee! That rhymes!) without hitting, breaking, or smashing anything.
On the other hand, once I started dosing myself with enough boiling hot herbal tea that no fever had a chance to keep up, I, well, stopped feeling feverish. In fact, the main problem for most of the night was that I didn't have much of a voice. At all. Gunk the consistency of used chewing gum kept adhering to my vocal chords, and I sounded, at best, like Everlast after smoking ten cigars.
I would have just said Everlast, but I couldn't hit the high notes in Put Your Lights On.
I tried singing for three songs, and then just gave up - the first time, in my memory, that I've done so. timenchanter offered to announce for me, but I stubbornly stuck to doing that, hopefully not too painfully for everyone.
Anyway, apart from me growling away in my booth apart from everyone (most people did come up and say hello, but interaction was, understandably, minimal), it wasn't a bad night. Certainly not crowded - I started at something like 8:30pm, and ran about 10 rotations before 1:55am - but a nice little group of people having fun. Bar income wasn't on target, but I'm getting used to it being 30% down, and it was only 25% down last night.
I also got enough tips to buy another disc, so I'm contemplating what to get.
Since firestrike was coming in, we were able to experience the joy of kshandra's singing, as well as the presence of maiandra. There was also a great deal of electrichobbit (he may not sing, but he's always decorative), trivialt, snafflekid, sparkle_journal and jackal_logic, several rounds of Carol, a new singer named Francisca who didn't really interact with anybody, and a little bit of hogarthhughes, who didn't sing, but also acted decorative.
We also had some relatively rare, but quite welcome hours of swanhart.
And, of course, supersniffles. Not to mention a couple of hours of lucydogstringer.
There were more, but they're not coming to mind right now.
Definitely a fun group, and towards the end of the night they started getting more experimental with duets, which was nice. It was amusing having Chelsea try to explain to me that Take Me or Leave Me is from Rent...
Though all the duets added to one rather entertaining bit of frustration on my part. The battery in the yellow mic only lasts about 2 and a half hours, so I normally change it before 10:30pm (because that's 2 and a half hours from a normal show start), then at around 11:45pm (because I don't have to do it again until the end of the evening).
I did the first change late, at 11:00pm, because I wasn't on top of my game (and, in fact, the battery had run out), but wasn't able to change it again until near 1:00am, because every time I planned to change it, someone would either simply use it, or grab it for a duet. Every song from 11:45pm on.
By the end of the night, I was eagerly anticipating getting home, so I could be miserable on my own. Which is pretty much what happened. Timmie was nice enough to get me some drive-thru, so I didn't have to try to talk to anyone, and then I went to sleep for a bit.
Then up, then back to sleep, then up, then...
In many ways I'm much better, and I have most of my voice back. But my throat is incredibly sore. Partly, I'm sure, from last night's coughing, as I tried to keep things clear, but also because my lymph nodes are swollen enough to be a problem. I've been massaging them, which seems to help, but I had some entertaining nightmares.
In one, I was trying to escape a subzero environment, as my flesh and, of course, my throat and lungs froze...
In any case, I believe the damn thing's getting better, and I'm likely to have a voice tonight, at least for a while. Which is a good thing on a suicide night.
I'm likely to get one of the waited-for discs today, though whether I put it into the system today depends entirely on how much time I spend awake. I also don't know which one, of three, it's likely to be. Another was shipped today, and will make it before Thursday.
And I need to get back to ordering the new one...
