I was just reading another article where a Boston official claimed they "acted appropriately." This is a city that is on some kind of psychosis-driven mission to protect the world from LEDs. Just ask Star Simpson.

Goodness forbid anyone install LED lighting at the Big Dig. It might illuminate a real reason to be in terror...

I'd feel a lot safer if they stopped selling volatile explosive liquids to everyone who owned anything bigger than a VW beetle. Anyone with a Hummer could take out small civic structures, and anyone who can drive a fuel tanker can take out almost any structure.

The simple fact of the matter is that technological civilizations are delicate. The infrastructure is pervasive, and therefore can't be protected at even the majority of possible attack points.

If we want to be safe, we're going to have to go back to a completely rural economy, with no dependence on fuel or electricity.

We'd have to drastically lower our population to do that, of course. Maybe a safe, controlled form of euthanasia?

Or we could just try to get a grasp on the concept of courage. Maybe even come to terms with the fact that no matter what happens, the world simply isn't ever going to be a safe place.

We can all learn a lot from the philosophies of the sperm whale and the bowl of petunias.

Don't panic.
