But still, I was set up before 8:00pm and ready to go. Ben's birthday party had started to gather, and... I had slips for myself and Johnathon. So I started showing videos, and wandered over to the group to see about scaring up some more slips. I got tenshinigami's, and started the actual "singing" bit around 8:15pm. Not too bad.
What I hadn't known was that the vast majority of Ben's party was part of a choral group. While only maybe 8 of them signed up, they all were excellent singers. It was kind of intimidating, to tell the truth. But very, very pretty.
Speaking of pretty, part of that party was a woman named Melanie. One of those extremely unfair people who's gorgeous, to all appearances extremely nice, and amazingly talented. She sadly appeared to be with an S.O. (ignoring that whole pesky "likely under half my age" thing), but was still an excellent source of both eye and ear-candy. She even said something about coming back.
'Round about 9:00pm, non-party regulars started showing up, I believe spearheaded by Jason and trivialt. Things actually started picking up, and built up to a reasonably large rotation by 10:30pm when... the birthday party kind of evaporated. Damn morning people.
This was all rather unimportant, because at something like 10:00pm, the Empress, spawrhawk, and Caesar walked in. I was able to get a few more in from that huge backlog of hugs, and not only did Debbie sing, but she also got Caesar to sing! Truly a night of miracles.
Sometime around there, supersniffles showed up decked to the gills, wearing my dress from Wednesday - which is now hers. It fits her perfectly, which is both great and... kind of disturbing. But she looked very nice, which is the important part.
We also had several more hours of Steve C, as well as B.J., who I haven't seen for months. They also brought in a woman named Jackie, who sang a few songs with B.J., and quite well.
lucydogstringer got there some time between 10:30pm and 11:00pm, after the main party had left, but I think before the rest of them had. But by 11:00pm, the rotation consisted of myself, Cindi, synkitty, and Steven. It continued that way until I shut down at 1:50am, at the end of the 13th rotation.
Well, with a couple of songs by (Annoying) Bob thrown in. I helped him on Ring of Fire, but was helpless on Tennessee Flat-Top Box. But that was OK - he threw in his own lyrics. I'm pretty sure he was responsible for 2/3 of my tips last night, too...
We had a lot of fun. Cindi picked most of my songs, both her and I picked several of Steven's (in one case, I just walked up, grabbed a slip at random, and walked away), Cindi picked Synthia's, and I was as usual picking Cindi's. I did my best to give her songs that somewhat matched the cocktail dress, but that's not really most of her envelope.
Since it was Sunday, I shut down pretty rapidly, but I ended up talking to Lily until nearly 3:00am. Then out to the car, where I started warming up the car to clear off some of the fog, only to find a couple of flashlights shining at me through said fog.
I'd been discovered by Mountain View's finest, who for some reason thought it was suspicious that there were two cars parked in front of the bar at 3:00am. 'Cause that never happens.
One of them asked what I was doing. I'm not sure "warming up my car" was what he wanted to hear. There seemed to be some mild disappointment as he learned that yes, we closed at 2:00pm, and yes, I worked there, and yes, there was another person inside. Then Lily walked out and locked up, and fortunately isn't the type to make up some wild story out of an odd sense of humor.
Still, they held me there for what felt like 10 minutes while they checked my ID. I was both glad I'd had nothing to drink last night, and gratified to learn that yes, the DMV really hadn't yanked my license on the 31st.
After they left, I went back to defrosting the windows, with the additional job of letting my heartrate subside.
Then off for some supper at the Mini, and home to collapse. Near literally. I almost didn't make it under the covers.
And that's it. My main drama today has involved communicating with Timmie - but that's his story to tell. Otherwise, I think it's time to get up for the day.
